Electrical Engineering

Why study Electrical Engineering?

In the Master’s programme in Electrical Engineering, you will do innovative research and design, analyze and realize smart and novel electrical components and systems. You will be actively involved in the department’s own research program and cooperate with other R&D departments in industry, through internships and a final graduation project.

Three unique strengths

The Electrical Engineering Master's at TU/e offers compelling advantages:

  • Industry Relevance: The programme offers state-of-the-art education together with strong links with industry. Many of our part-time professors also hold positions in leading companies, helping to ensure our research and teaching remains highly relevant.
  • Specialised Tracks: We offer a range of four specialised Master’s tracks, allowing you to develop expertise in high-demand areas such as energy systems, semiconductors, integrated photonics, and advanced electronics—ensuring a tailored and future-oriented educational experience.
  • International Opportunities: Through tracks like the EIT InnoEnergy Master’s in Smart Electrical Networks and Systems (SENSE), you can gain a double degree by studying at top European universities, providing a global perspective on electrical engineering challenges.
Connection with semiconductors industry

One of the programme's key tracks is Semiconductor Devices and Technology, designed to prepare you for a career at the forefront of modern electronics and chip innovation. This track goes beyond traditional microelectronics and covers a broad spectrum of technologies, including analogue and digital integrated circuits, integrated photonics, power electronics, heterogeneous integration, and emerging computing paradigms such as neuromorphic computing. You will gain in-depth knowledge of the design, modelling, and fabrication of advanced semiconductor devices and systems, equipping you with the skills needed in today’s rapidly evolving chip ecosystem.

TU/e is located in the heart of the Brainport region, one of Europe’s leading semiconductor hubs. The programme benefits from proximity to key companies such as NXP Semiconductors, Philips Semiconductors, Axelera, Smart Photonics, Effect Photonics, Euclyd, Nexperia, and Ampleon. This provides excellent opportunities for collaboration, internships, and careers across a wide range of semiconductor technologies.

Programme structure

In addition to the regular Master’s programme in Electrical Engineering, we offer four special Master’s tracks, giving you the flexibility to specialise your studies:

  • Care and Cure: Applies electrical engineering principles to healthcare technology.
  • EIT InnoEnergy Master’s in Smart Electrical Networks and Systems (SENSE): This track focuses on designing, implementing and managing smart grids. Students following this programme study their first year in Sweden and their second year at TU/e. As a result, they gain a double degree in the relevant master’s programme from each university.

You will be actively involved in research, culminating in an internship and a final graduation project, which could be at a research group on our department, or in industry

Career perspectives

As a graduate of this Master’s programme, you can enter an innovative and managerial career across a vast array of high-tech industries. Career paths include roles such as R&D Engineer, System Architect, Design Engineer, or Project Manager. Graduates are highly sought after in sectors like microelectronics (semiconductors), telecommunications, automotive, energy (smart grids), and medical devices. The strong links with industry and the specialised knowledge gained in tracks like Semiconductor Devices and Technology and SENSE ensure exceptional opportunities within the Brainport region and internationally.

Our tracks

The Electrical Engineering program at TU/e offers a range of specialized tracks that allow students to tailor their studies to their interests and career goals.

"TU/e’s MSc Electrical Engineering introduced me to the fast-growing photonics industry in Brainport. Now, as a TU/e PhD student, I’m designing chips to make next-gen fiber internet faster and more energy-efficient."
