Molecular Sciences

From developing materials for semiconductor manufacturing to creating biocompatible polymers for medical devices, molecular scientists drive innovation across industries. Molecular Sciences is a creative discipline involving the synthesis of molecules with new biological or physical properties to meet scientific or societal challenges. You'll design molecules for catalytic conversions, future medicines, and next-generation conducting polymers.

"Teaching takes place in small groups and in a stimulating, personal setting with top-level research facilities unique in Europe."

Molecular Chemistry

Ready to design molecules that change the world? Molecular Chemistry lies at the heart of chemistry, where you'll synthesise molecules with new biological or physical properties to address scientific challenges. Think catalytic conversions, lead compounds for medicines, or next-generation conducting polymers.

Working with chemical structures, the possibilities are endless—in principle, every molecule can be made. You'll adapt 3D-structures to desired properties and design efficient synthesis methods, participating in challenging research projects with internationally renowned groups.

Physical Chemistry

Fascinated by unravelling molecular mysteries? Physical Chemistry aims to understand the underlying principles of molecular and material properties through advanced theory and physical experimentation. You'll develop spectroscopic experiments involving high magnetic fields, free-electron lasers, and scanning probe microscopes.

Unlike many universities, in Nijmegen all physical and chemical departments unite in one institute, making collaboration second nature. You'll work with unique European facilities whilst developing fundamental knowledge that flows back to all chemistry branches.

Medicinal Chemistry

Want to discover tomorrow's medicines? Medicinal chemists are indispensable in preclinical drug development. You'll study all stages from discovery and design to development and targeted delivery, including toxicity analysis and understanding pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.

Learn key aspects of designing molecules as preclinical drug candidates, diagnostic tools, or for target identification. You'll receive practical training in a multidisciplinary environment where all chemistry and chemical biology groups collaborate to tackle exciting problems.

Chemistry of Life

Curious about life at the molecular level? You'll focus on complex molecular systems in biological contexts, learning how cells work from a chemist's perspective whilst becoming an expert in biologically relevant molecules.

Use organic chemistry and biomolecular chemistry to probe and modify cellular function, work on drug delivery methods, or gain hands-on experience with single cell technologies. Almost half our students pursue PhD positions after graduating, with all students finding jobs within months.

Our specialisations

The Molecular Sciences programme offers a range of specialisations that allow students to tailor their studies to their interests and career goals.

“I particularly like, that the Master’s programme Molecular Chemistry offers a lot of space for internships.”
