Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology focuses on the smallest scale, exactly where many breakthroughs in chip innovation are taking place. In this Master’s, you will develop the skills to design, fabricate, and analyse materials and devices at the nanoscale.

Why study Nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology enables breakthroughs in materials, devices, and chip innovation. With strong ties to the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology – one of Europe’s leading research centres – you’ll benefit from direct access to advanced facilities such as the NanoLab and its state-of-the-art cleanroom.

The University of Twente is the only research university in the Netherlands that offers a multidisciplinary Master’s in Nanotechnology, integrating all disciplines, from physics to chemistry and from electrical to biomedical engineering. This breadth of disciplines enables you to tackle real-world nano-related challenges – whether you're working on semiconductors, advanced materials for etching, novel nanoelectronics, or lab-on-chip systems that support next-gen sensors. Through practical training in the NanoLab, you will gain hands-on experience in developing materials and devices at scales directly relevant to chip manufacturing and other industrial applications.

Studying Nanotechnology will give you excellent career prospects. The multidisciplinary approach of this Master’s not only deepens your understanding of amongst others, transistor physics and fabrication processes, but also helps you to integrate novel materials, design compact devices, and optimise systems. That makes you a strong candidate for roles like process engineer, IC/materials developer, semiconductor R&D engineer – or even founder of a chip-focused start-up.
